Project Overview

Breen Resources is planning the next stage of the delivery of the Marang Parklands in Kurnell, along with changes to its resource recovery facility.

Breen is converting 42 hectares of land into community open space. The proposal includes rehabilitating and creating new parkland with walking tracks, parking, lookouts and other amenities.

Key features

  • An outdoor amphitheatre
  • Picnic facilities, including tables and shelters
  • A playground and village green
  • A giant slide and lookout point
  • A network of accessible walking tracks and trails
  • Parking for up to 200 vehicles
  • Environmentally sensitive landscaping using Dune Forest, Coastal Heath, and grasses
  • 3 fields have been delivered already, with additional 7 playing fields to be used for soccer, rugby league, rugby, AFL, cricket, baseball, and other sporting groups

The proposal also includes relocating Breen’s current operations to the site’s eastern end, with a new access point off the Lindum Road roundabout. This new facility will employ modern technology and enclosed operations to minimise dust and noise in the surrounding environment while redirecting construction waste from landfills to create products that can be used in the civil and landscape sectors.

This proposal does not replace existing agreements with Sutherland Shire Council to construct new sports fields, which will be completed in the coming years.

In November 2024, Breen received consent from the NSW Government for developing the Marang Parklands and delivering an adjacent state-of-the-art Resource Recovery Facility in South Sydney.

For many years, Breen has envisioned landholdings on the Kurnell Peninsula. The family-owned company has wanted to progressively rehabilitate its original sand extraction sites to include significant community-focussed facilities that meet clear environmental and public objectives while also investing in state-of-the-art resource recovery infrastructure, serving the surrounding region.

Stage 1 (Completed)

Greenhills Skate Park

Greenhills Skate Park offers a skateable area of approximately 1600m2. It has a bowl area featuring a large vertical transition, a street zone with stair sets and a snake run area that pays homage to the early days of skateboarding.

The skate park was designed and built by Convic in collaboration with Breen, Council, local skaters and Shire residents.

Marang Parklands Hockey Fields

Marang Parklands, formerly Greenhills Parklands, was renamed in consultation with local Indigenous representatives and the community to recognise and acknowledge Dharawal as the first language in the Sutherland Shire.

The word ‘Marang’, meaning ‘Sandhill’, recognises the historical landscape of the area.

The Marang hockey fields are the home of the Sydney South Hockey Association. This state-of-the-art facility consists of two synthetic hockey fields and is capable of hosting state championships.
